Social media image sizes 2026: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, X
The right pixel sizes for posts, stories, covers and profile pictures, checked against each platform's official help pages in October 2026.
Daniel Robert Dinu, founder of Nivlo ·
The short answer: for almost any post, work at 1080 px wide. Square 1080×1080, portrait 1080×1350 (4:5) or 1080×1440 (3:4), stories and reels 1080×1920 (9:16). The image shown when you share a link is 1200×630. Covers differ on every platform and are the ones that get cropped most often, so check the tables below.
We took these sizes from each platform’s official pages on 28 October 2026. Where a platform doesn’t publish a figure, we used the value recommended by the Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Buffer guides and marked it “(common)”.
| Format | Size (px) | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Tall portrait post | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4, the tallest shape kept uncropped |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Story and reel | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
| Reel cover | 420 × 654 | 1:1.55 |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 (common) | 1:1 |
Instagram keeps images up to 1080 px wide at full resolution, with a ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Other ratios get cropped. Since 2025 the profile grid shows thumbnails in 3:4, so a 4:5 portrait appears slightly cropped at the edges in the grid.
For stories and reels, Meta recommends (for ads) keeping the top of the image (about 14%) and the bottom (about 35%) clear, where the account name, buttons and captions appear.
| Format | Size (px) | Notes |

| Story | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |

Preparing one photo for several networks
You have one event photo and need it in the feed, in stories and on LinkedIn. Don’t resize the original three times at random. Crop one version per ratio from the original (4:5, 9:16, 1.91:1), then export each at the width in the table. Cropping, formats and quality are covered in our guide on resizing images without losing quality.
In Nivlo you can do this straight from the original file: the Edit tab has ready-made Instagram formats (portrait 1080 × 1350, square 1080 × 1080, story 1080 × 1920) and custom sizes for everything else.
Common mistakes
- Uploading a landscape photo as a story. The platform shrinks it and adds bars or a coloured background above and below. Crop to 9:16.
- Putting text at the edge of a cover. On mobile, the Facebook cover is cropped at the sides and the profile picture covers part of it. Keep text near the centre.
- Exporting below the size in the table. The image looks soft on phone screens. Start from the original and export at exactly the required size.
- Using old cheat sheets. Platforms change formats often. Instagram, for example, switched the profile grid to 3:4 in 2025.
